Restoration Fund

A church in Brooklyn, New York known for its historic roots as well as its modern day vitality stands silently awaiting support. The sanctuary of the New Utrecht Reformed Church, established in 1677, has been closed for restoration since before Christmas 2003. Scaffolding has been erected from the basement of the building up through to the attic to prevent the roof's collapse. Church activities including Sunday worship now take place in the parish house next door. The estimated cost of repair is nearly $2 million.

The New Utrecht Reformed Church is located on 18th Avenue between 83rd and 84th Streets. It has been a community home for organizations and church members from several denominations. The church, its parish house, cemetery and grounds are in care of the Reformed Church in America (RCA). The pastor is the Reverend Terry Troia, Executive Director of Project Hospitality on Staten Island, a service for community members who are hungry, homeless or otherwise in need. The church grounds are easily identifiable from miles around by the 106' tall Liberty Pole on its front lawn, the sixth in succession since the first was raised in 1783 as the British departed the shores of what was to become the United States of America.

The preservation of this magnificent treasure and historic community resource calls for significant financial assistance. The Friends of Historic New Utrecht (FHNU) is currently accepting charitable contributions to our Restoration Fund.
